I thought I’d post this question from Lisa Rowe since a lot of people seem to be asking it lately:
Am I just screwed as far as care goes? I have BPDOff the charts. I live with my mom & she is in bankruptcy. I cannot work so I have no job nor health ins. I want to go to a NON county/state hospital to get REAL quality care for my BPD. My mom has sent letters to hospitals in ALL these states I want to go to because I HATE Texas. There has to be BPD treatment facilities up north in places like CO, OR, North CA, WA, MA, NY, VA, PA or somewhere where it’s not 500 degrees in the summer time like Houston TX. The responses my mom has gotten is “go to your county mental health services”. I have already done that. It’s a JOKE! I don’t want to go to Ben Taub & that’s FINAL. Why are all the JERKS telling me I have no hope. Why can’t another hospital in another state that has a CARING staff unlike crappy county hospitals with loon buckets. How can I get into a PRIVATE hospital in another state to get PROPER treatment for my BPD. Screw therapy. I want to go to a decent HOSPITAL with caring staff members and NOT a state or county dump hole with uncaring staff members.
Answer: There are a variety of effective treatments for borderline personality disorder (BPD) available. Usually, BPD is treated with a combination of medication and psychotherapy. In addition, during times of crisis, individuals with BPD may require brief periods of hospitalization to remain safe. More recently, self-help tools have been developed to supplement traditional treatments for BPD. Long-term outpatient psychotherapy, or “talking therapy,” is an important part of any treatment for BPD. People with BPD may need intensive BPD treatment. Sometimes People with BPD are admitted to a psychiatric hospital for intensive treatment. Inpatient treatment requires you to stay overnight in the hospital.Another treatment option is partial hospitalization or day treatment. These are programs that are more intensive than traditional outpatient psychotherapy, but do not require you to stay overnight. You may be enrolled in a partial hospital or day program if you may be headed toward a crisis, or if you have just been discharged from inpatient hospitalization and need a period of more intensive treatment to make sure the crisis does not re-emerge.If you’re experiencing a mental health emergency, it is critical that you get help immediately. Call 911 or go to your nearest emergency room. If there is evidence that you are a danger to yourself or others, you may be admitted for a brief hospital stay on an inpatient psychiatric unit until the crisis has passed.Although the lack of clear free treatments for BPD can be frustrating, it is important not to let this deter you from seeking therapy. Treatment for BPD needs to be consistent if it is going to be effective. Therefore, it is important that you know what your benefits are, and discuss plans for to continued treatment with your therapists as soon as possible. Dont give up, there is help for you, just ask and be persistent. Take care as always!
